Private Renting
Renting from a landlord is a popular way to get your first place. Here’s what you need to know:
- It’s competitive right now! Lots of people are looking for places, so you need to act fast.
- You can find homes to rent through letting agencies, websites, newspapers, and more.
- If you find a place you like that fits your budget, contact the landlord or letting agent quickly to arrange a viewing.
Important! Landlord Registration
Before renting any property, always check the landlord’s registration number. It’s a legal requirement for landlords to be registered. If they aren’t registered, do not rent from them. You can also check if letting agencies are on the official letting agent register.
Tenancy Agreements
If you’re offered a place, you’ll need to sign a tenancy agreement. This is a contract between you and the landlord. It includes:
- Your details and the landlord’s details.
- The address of the property.
- How much the rent is and when it’s due.
- How to pay the rent.
On the Scottish Government website there is an example of what a tenancy agreement looks like.
