Citizens Advice urge access to basic banking
3rd June 2026
Access to no frills bank accounts could help tackle poverty.
Thousands of people across the region are struggling without a bank account according to a local charity.
Dumfries and Galloway Citizens Advice Service (D&G CAS) is launching a campaign to promote the uptake of basic bank accounts for those denied a standard account.
Christine Sinclair, operations manager for D&G CAS commented:
“Not having a bank account means nowhere to have wages or benefits paid into. It means being unable to set up direct debits and paying extra for bills. People are forced into high-cost credit because affordable loans from a bank are not available.
Christine added:
“The Government requires all high street banks to offer basic accounts but the banks don’t publicise them. We would urge banks to actively promote these accounts.
“Apart from not allowing overdrafts these accounts are just as good as standard current accounts. There are no charges and most banks have special teams to support customers with financial difficulties.
“These basic accounts are open to people who have experienced bankruptcy or who are in debt. Most banks avoid applicants having to go through credit checks.”
