Universal Credit (UC)
What it is:
Universal Credit is a payment from the government to help people with living costs. It replaces a bunch of older benefits like Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income Support, and Housing Benefit, rolling them into one monthly payment. You might get UC if you’re on a low income, unemployed, or can’t work.
Who can get it?
- If you’re 18 or older and under State Pension age (some exceptions for 16- and 17-year-olds).
- You must be living in the UK.
- Your savings need to be under £16,000 (if over that, you’re not eligible).
What it covers:
It helps with:
- Basic living costs for yourself and your family (if you have one).
- Housing costs like rent.
- Childcare if you have kids and you work.
You might get extra money if you:
- Look after children.
- Have a disability or health condition that makes it hard to work.
- Are a carer for someone else.
How much do you get?
It depends on things like:
- Your age.
- If you have kids or a partner.
- If you have savings.
